June Wrap-up: A Topsy-Turvy Yet Productive Month

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all doing well, June was a bit of an ups and downs month for me and it’s all been so busy that I didn’t even realise July is already here. But then that’s me almost every month, hehe. Time has no meaning. Anyway, I’ve got lots to talk about so let’s move on to the bookish updates πŸ™‚

June Wrap-up: A Topsy-Turvy Yet Productive Month

Books I Read

What a book! This had such a lush narrative and descriptions with two beautifully written morally-grey women. AND THE SLOWBURN ENEMIES TO LOVERS OH MY GOD. It was everything I ever wanted. 4.5/5 stars

What a sequel!!! Our beloved Darius has changed a bit and he’s dealing with some old and new issues and I just love every bit of it. My favourite part is probably the number of themes the author pushed through in his writing, whether big or small that really sort of brought this book together. 4.5/5 stars

This was such a perfect end to the most amazing trilogy ever! Seriously, my heart was in my throat throughout this book and I loved every minute of it. 5/5 stars

I expected to like this book but I didn’t expect to fall in love from the very beginning. The writing, plot, worldbuilding – everything pulled me in immediately and I can’t wait to read the next book. 4.5/5 stars

I have so many mixed opinions on this one. Loved the romance and the main characters and the plot was engaging but the writing and dialogue weren’t the best and the initial 20% of the book was bland and slow. 3.5/5 stars

This was such a wholesome and lovely lesbian love story plus the Indian rep made my heart melt. It’s the perfect book to read in one sitting. 4/5 stars

Books I Hauled

My friend Sim sent me a copy for my birthday and ahhh it’s so pretty! This was the first book I ever read by Akemi and I cried so much… really happy to have it in my little library πŸ™‚

This is the book I’ve picked up to translate for my creative writing thesis and I’m so psyched! I’m supposed to read it and get some of the first draft done this summer and it’s something I’m really looking forward to.

Everything I Binge-Watched

Just a heads up, I went through some dumps in June and I usually end up watching rom-coms whenever that happens so this wrap-up will have a few of those… I’ve seen Isn’t It Romantic like 4? 5? times now? It’s such a comfort movie for me and I just absolutely love how it makes fun of other rom coms while being a rom com itself.

Oof, another classic with Adam Sandler who’s one of my favourite rom-com actors. Just this movie is so funny and cute and also sometimes weird. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve rewatched it.

I was doing a rewatch of every MCU movie that featured Loki in preparation for the Loki tv show. I do really love this movie because it’s the first time the avengers come together so it was great to watch.

I’m not a fan of this one. I’ve never cared for the plot or for Jane but the Loki parts were golden, ugh I love this character so much I’ll watch anything for him.

Another comfort movie! Of course it’s not as good as the original Jumanji but again, such a fun movie that I love to watch.

I absolutely adore stand-up comedy and I pride myself on having seen almost all the specials on Amazon Prime by Indian comedians so I was delighted when I found this new one! Absolutely hilarious, especially all the digs on Indian parents XD

If you’re new here I’ll let you know that every once in a while I’ll get the urge to binge a season of Survivor and that’s what happened this month, hehe. I’ve started keeping track of the seasons I’ve seen cause I watch in a random order and I’m kinda running out of seasons… whoops.

I’m super excited for the eighth season of Brooklyn 99! I just rewatched all the seasons sort of as background music. Like this show was running on my laptop constantly as I did my chores, had my meals and what not.

I just – wow. This show sort of blew my mind. If you’re a fan of Norse mythology I think you’ll really like this superhero show. It’s kind of slow and some of the episodes and moments are filler but the plot twists and the climaxes are totally worth it. Gosh, I really do hope we get a third season!

Life Updates

I think June was mostly me trying to get my life around. The first couple days were a bit rough and I went through some mood swings but then I started to revamp my notion. I’ve been using Notion for a long time now but I’ve kept it plain and to the point. But looking at everyone else’s beautiful pages made me so jealous so I decided to revamp my Notion and I’m so freaking happy with how it all looks!

To start with, I made two home pages, one for personal use and other for everything related to my blog and bookstagram and academics. I’m also slowly shifting all my reading trackers onto Notion cause I want everything to be in one place and platform.

I also finally developed a workout schedule of sorts. I’m someone who gets bored very quickly so I’m currently going through Bollywood dance workouts that I found on YouTube and damn, I didn’t realise how much I missed to dance. I’m hoping to be regular at this going forward.

In terms of writing, June was the month I finally sat down and outlined my Princess Rising WIP. It’s loosely a darker and sapphic retelling of Aladdin. This might possibly the first and only wip that I fully outlined using the three act structure. Most of the characters are fleshed out and I’ve even outlined some scene cards and begun writing the first few chapters. I just really hope that I don’t lose the momentum. It’s really easy for me to get scared of writing and just failing to deliver to the point I don’t write.

Most of this stuff has only been possible because I’m still on a summer break which means I have a lot of time on my hands. And if there’s one thing I hate is having endless time and nothing to do which is why I packed my schedule… I’m getting a head start on my creative writing thesis for which I’m doing yet another translation! I’ve picked up this book and just begun translating which means I’m yet to reach the part of my progress where I feel like ripping my hair out πŸ™‚

I also took a couple of psychology courses online which were actually quite boring and I ended up dropping them mid-way. I still have an internship to keep me busy but I also enrolled in a workshop which is partly a training to become a peer supporter. It’s quite interesting and yet mentally exhausting at the same time. But we did some mock cases and I think the reward of being able to help out someone else is just so satisfactory, it’s absolutely worth it.

So yeah, it’s been a busy month, and I’m not sure what’s waiting for me in July (haha I’m writing this more than a week into July and I’ve been a lazy ass so far) but I’m probably going to be carrying forward a couple of these projects and fingers crossed, go to driving school. Here’s to hoping July is going to be great πŸ™‚

How was your June? What all were you up to?

Have you seen any movies or shows that I mentioned in my wrap-up?

What are your thoughts on the books I talked about? Have you read them or are they on your TBR?

  1. The Bone Witch is amazing! I am so glad you are a fan too! The narration style, the prose, the spectacular world-building…it was all too good! I even found some nods to my culture in the book, such as the “cha-khana”, “sherwani”, “phaloode”. These things are all part of Bangladeshi culture too so it made even happier when I came across them in the book.

    • Yesss! Omg yes I noted the sherwani too and other stuff seemed so familiar, it only added to the experience πŸ™‚ Hopefully I’ll get started on the next book this month!

  2. Ah I feel you on the losing momentum with writing, I am terrible for outlining my projects though I never used to outline and would just go with the flow xD I’ve heard of good things for Jasmine Throne so I’m sure I’ll pick it up eventually…maybe next year? I’m also planning on starting ASOWF at some point this year hopefully.

Eeeep I totally agree with you on The Bone Witch, I knew going into that the pacing would be slow and so I was ready for that. However I was not ready for how much I would end up loving the book, I’m scared yet excited to continue with that trilogy haha. I don’t think I’m ready for the pain xD

    • Oof it’s half a month and I’ve made no progress. I was supposed to do camp nano LOL. Hopefully I’ll be able to kick myself to getting back on it.

Oh yaaay! Those are both great books although TJT is much slower that ASOWF.
Am I the only one who didn’t find the pacing slow??? I kinda loved it so much I forgot about the pacing hehe. Oh yes I feel this is another pain trilogy lmao, rip. Gonna try and finish the series for Wikathon which Kate is gonna be hosting in August so let’s see!
