Everything I Binge-Watched in August

It’s been a crazy month as I’ve slowly been driven insane with my boredom, clinging to Netflix as a sole ray of hope. Seriously, I think this is the most I’ve ever binge-watched and by the end of the month I was literally sick of looking at an electronic screen. Which is ironically how I ended my reading slump but anyway, now you all get to see all the crazy binge-watching I’ve been up to 🙂

Everything I Binge-Watched in August

SHOWS I WATCHED

1. The Umbrella Academy S2

I have been waiting for season 2 of this show since more than a year and oh my god it was absolutely worth the wait. I am legit dead with everything that happened in this show. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to review this show, all I can do is beg you to watch it.

Also, we are NOT going to talk about what happened with THAT character. I AM NOT OKAY, I WILL NEVER BE OKAY.

2. Sugar Rush S1, 2, Extra Sweet, Sugar High and Sugar Rush Christmas

Umm okay, so something weird happened this month. I’ve never watched any cooking or baking shows purely because it makes me so hungry and crave all those ridiculous dishes. But last month I was going through periods of nausea thanks to a medication I’m on so I decided to take advantage of that and oh my god I got sucked into baking shows. So bad. I was so obsessed, I literally dreamt about contestants baking lmao.

I love the Sugar Rush series because oh my god such beautiful creations?! I’m a very low-key baker, I probably won’t even call myself that, but I learnt so much through this show and honestly I was mainly there for those aesthetics.

3. Nailed It S1, 2, 3, 4 & Nailed It Holiday

Nailed It is so very different from Sugar Rush because it’s literally the opposite, amateurs failing at recreating masterpieces. First off, I love Nicole Byer and Jacque Torres, I live for that duo. They made the whole experience so delightful. Other than that oh my god I laughed so hard. Seriously, this show is so hilarious, my sister choked on her coke and I honestly cried so much and had stitches in my stomach. Would 10/10 recommend.

4. Zumbo’s Just Desserts

So apparently I like more of shows where the contestants remain the same and there is a process of elimination because that gives me more time to get to know them and get attached. This show was absolutely amazing and I was honestly astounded by all the different creations that were made.

5. Glow Up S1 & 2

If you don’t know, I love being creative with makeup. I absolutely adore doing book cover inspired makeup looks so watching this show was an absolute delight. I’m honestly in awe of all the makeup looks these contestants created and also pretty jealous at the sort of beautiful and advanced materials they get to work with. Like I’ve grown up in a household where we never throw lipsticks. Literally never. The other day I washed my mom’s makeup brushes, some of which haven’t been washed since I was 10… you get the point.

Anyway, if you’re someone who’s creative and just loves looking at beautiful aesthetics this show is definitely for yo.

6. I Am Not Okay With This S1

This was such an easy binge, took me less than 12 hours and I quite liked it! I really loved Sydney’s character, infact I love literally every chaacter in this show. They’re just a teeny bit weird and absolutely themselves 🙂

I’m also here for the female friendship and male female friendship. Not giving any spoilers but we get gay stuff and nothing makes me happier. I would have loved a little more information on the sort of powers Syd has and why they’re resurfacing at the moment and what they really mean but I guess that’s what S2 is going to be about. Looking forward to it!

MOVIES I WATCHED

1. Work It

The minute I knew Keiynan Lonsdale was in this movie I was game. But omg you’re giving me Jordan freaking Fisher and Liza Koshy as well? DREAM CAST!!! Seriously, this movie was so good, I loved all the dance sequences and honestly I was drooling over Jordan Fisher the entire time. Who was not? Anyway, I don’t see why people are hating on this, it’s just a fun rom-com, chill you all.

2. The Sleepover

Again, such a fun movie! It was one of those mindless and funny adventure-action movies that you have to watch after shutting away your brain to enjoy. And that was what I really needed at the time. What can I say, it was just fun to watch.

3. Smurfs: The Lost Village

Hi, I’m a huge Smurfs stan. I love the first two movies and well, obviously this was different, even the animations style slightly differed but I still enjoyed the cute plotline. I’m a sucker for animated films.

4. The Roommate

Oh boy, I have so much to say about this one. Let it be known that I was really excited for this one because I love me some creepy thrillers and having had my share of bad roommate experiences, I thought I might relate.

Halfway through the movie though, I realised that the creepy roommate was actually diagnosed with a psychological disorder. I’m so insanely mad. Some of you might know that I’m a huge psychology nerd and I’m sick and tired of people with disorders being painted as villains, especially when it comes to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It is absolutely revolting how media takes mentally ill people and chracterises them to be terrifying and psychotic when in reality they’re usually more harmful to themselves than others.

Both schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are extremely serious and have no seeming cure. People who have a psychology background or read about disorders may be aware of this horrendous portrayal in media but for everyone else, movies and tv shows is their first encounter with psychological disorders. It paints an image that people with mental disorders are dangerous and to be feared and that they should always be kept at an arm’s length and I’m sick and tired of this discrimination.

Okay, rant over. But seriously, keep an eye out for such portrayals. You’ll be surprised at how many ‘psychological thrillers’ follow this plotline.

5. The Willoughbys

This was another sorta fun and cute animated movie that I watched when I was bored. I was only mildly entertained so I was really surprised when the last couple of scenes got me emotional but what can I say, found family melts my heart 🙂

6. Zathura

I’m a huge fan of Jumanji and I remember watching Zathura as a kid and loving it because it basically had the same concept but in space. It’s been years since I watched it but I still love it so freaking much and oh my god Kristen Stewart was in this? I had no idea. Gah, I just need more movies revolving around board games and puzzles and that sort of nerdy stuff.

7. Snow White and the Huntsman

What even was this movie??? A pathetic waste of time. I was absolutely clickbaited. The netflix description clearly stated that this Snow White would battle the Evil Queen with skills learnt from the huntsman who was sent to kill her. I honestly expected we would get a badass warrior montage and some great fighting but nope.

All the fighting that was taught to her was one move. One move. This movie really got under my skin cause it was so boring, I literally couldn’t bare to watch it. And I’m gonna give you a spoiler because nobody should watch this movie. You know how Snow White got revived from the poisonous apple? The huntsman kissed her. The piece of apple did not fall from her throat or something. She just magically woke up because of his magical kiss with no explanation whatsoever and I want to scream.

Please don’t waste your time on this movie.

Are you an of cooking shows? If not what type of movies, shows or documentaries are you obsessed with?

Have you ever noticed the bad rep that psychological disorders get in movies and tv shows? Bad rep is NOT better than no rep.

What did you watch in September? Any highlights of the month?

  1. Oh my God I effing HATE the trope of having the villain have some mental illness. It’s so harmful and ugly. There was that movie with James McAvoy a while ago, Split, and for a while there I was just seeing the trailer every time I watched TV — exactly the same thing!

For a change of pace, I’ve been binging a podcast! My friend got obsessed with The Magnus Archives so I am listening to the whole first season to see how we go. I’m enjoying it but also excited for it to get into the broader story arcs vs the anthology format — but the anthology format is still fun!

    • Yes, yes! Split was one if the first ones I saw and smol me didn’t see anything wrong until I went online and read the reviews.

Oh that’s great! I personally am not a huge podcast person but know that they can be quite fun 😊

  2. Ugh, I loved the second season of The Umbrella Academy. My body is ready (not really) for season three!! I’ve been watching the newest season of Lucifer so far and while it’s good, it still feels like much of the same and that’s disappointing, if that makes sense lol. I want to watch Ghoul, which is a scary series on Netflix, and I’m hoping to watch more Lost. I started it on a whim one night and now I’m hooked haha. XD Hope you have a lovely weekend, Charvi! ♥

    • Ahhh ikr, like give it on me now!!!
I watched a sort of gist of Episode 1 of Lucifer and it doesn’t seem like my thing just cause I have slightly more evil notions of Lucifer lol, he seems too humanised. Thank you so much Shafiya, hope you have a great week ahead ❤

      • He’s definitely more humanised and that is probably my biggest complaint. I do enjoy him as an evil deviant haha. XD

  3. I loved the first part of The Umbrella Academy and God Knows why I have not watched the Season 2 yet. I need to get to it soon. I am halfway through the Sleep Over, and it looks fun!

  4. YES, YES, YES!!! The Umbrella Academy is so good!! I really want to go out and buy all the graphic novels, but I also don’t want to ruin the series for myself either… there’s a fine line between these two things 😂
