Happy new year everyone!
January 2020 is finally here and as 2020 rolls in I’m determined to keep a track of all these new book releases and try not to let any of them slip away from me. So on the first of every month, you can expect a post from me about the new releases in that month. I obviously can’t cover all new releases and I’m not really aiming for that. I’m just tracking releases that sound right up my alley, books that I want to read.
I’ve got a long list lined up so let’s get going!
JANUARY NEW RELEASES TO LOOK OUT FOR
I just need to start off by asking why the world is conspiring against my wallet and how are half of the books on this list releasing on 7th? HOW???
LOVEBOAT, TAIPEI
I was lucky enough to get an early review copy of this book and be part of a blog tour where I did a cover inspired make-up post. And wow, this book surprised me by being a 5-star read. I thought it would be a fun romance kind of read but it is so much more than that!
For those who don’t know, Loveboat, Taipei is about eighteen-year-old Ever Wong whose parents send her to Taiwan for a summer program with hundreds of overachievers. Ever is not happy to be there and decides to rebel against her parents by breaking every Wong rule possible. But if she’s not careful she might break her heart too.
RELEASE DATE: 7th Jan
LIE TO ME
Lie To Me is a thriller that explores the story of Amelia who wakes up in the hospital, recovering from a near-death fall that she has no memory of. Everyone says that it was an accident but somehow she remembers being pushed. Now she must try to find out the truth with her new boyfriend while treading lightly as she questions the honesty of every single person.
I’m on a blog tour for this one and I’m super pumped because mystery-thrillers with aspects of amnesia are right down my lane! You can expect a review on the blog very soon 🙂
RELEASE DATE: 7th Jan
SCAVENGE THE STARS
Scavenge The Stars is packed with high-stakes adventure, romance, and duelling identities, this gender-swapped retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo is the first novel in an epic YA fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo.
I’ve been hearing so much about this book. I literally can’t spend a day on social media and not see people talking about it. I haven’t read The Count of Monte Cristo and the blurb doesn’t give you a lot except that she’s on a ship and rescues a man who offers her anything she wants, which is revenge. I can’t make out much from it except that it does sound super interesting and I’m here for it.
RELEASE DATE: 7th Jan
NAMELESS QUEEN
Nameless Queen is about a girl who never expected to be the queen. She’s not the king’s daughter, she’s a Nameless, belonging to a class of people who don’t even get names. But the tattoo on her arm decrees her to be the queen and now she must handle the responsibility that comes with it all.
This premise is s=intriguing because I love when characters are thrust into places and situations where they have no idea what to do, especially when it comes to royalty. It’s going to be a fun ride watching this protagonist make her way through it. Although I hope she gets some sort of name soon because, um, what are we supposed to call her?
RELEASE DATE: 7th Jan
THE GOD GAME
I don’t normally take to books centred around video games because I’ve played them maybe like 3 times in my life? When I was stuck with a guy who only had a room filled with video games. But either way, The God Gamesound too good to pass on.
Charlie and his friends are playing the G.O.D Game run by underground hackers and controlled by a mysterious AI that believes it’s God. When they accomplish a mission, the game rewards them with expensive tech, revenge on high-school tormentors, and cash flowing from ATMs. But then the threatening messages start. Mysterious parcels appear, people start shadowing them and whatnot. Will the game stay true to its word: Win and ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE.™ Lose, you die!
RELEASE DATE: 7th Jan
OASIS
When the sandstorm hits, Alif’s camp gets wiped away and she struggles to survive… until she and her friends find the oasis. It has everything they need: food, water, shade—and mysterious ruins that hide a deadly secret. As reality begins to shift around them, they question what’s real and what’s a mirage. And while it was easy to walk into the oasis, it may be impossible to leave . . . The oasis saved them. But who will save them from the oasis?
First off, that cover is gorgeous. Second, Oasis is a supernatural thriller and I haven’t read very many of those but this one sounds super mysterious.
RELEASE DATE: 7th Jan
INFINITY SON
I’m a huge fan of Adam Silvera and I’ve read all of his books. I was completely floored when he finally announced Infinity Son because I had been following his progress on the book on his twitter, and it was about time!
There is a huge complex summary on Goodreads but I’ll tell you all you need to know. There’s magic, there’s brotherhood, there’s a fight amongst groups and best of all; this book is written by Adam freaking Silvera. Also, would you look at that cover?
RELEASE DATE: 14th Jan
DARK AND DEEPEST RED
I don’t turn towards the genre of historical-fiction very often but Dark And Deepest Red has a premise that drew me in like a magnet.
In the summer of 1518, a strange sickness sweeps through Strasbourg: women dance in the streets, some until they fall down dead. Five centuries later, a pair of red shoes seal to Rosella Oliva’s feet, making her dance uncontrollably. She meets a guy who knows the history of the dancing fever back in 1518 because it was his family who took the blame for it all. Now the two of them must figure out the whole truth, because there’s more to the story than what Emil knows, and they must hurry up if Rosella is going to survive the shoes at all.
RELEASE DATE: 14th Jan
RACE TO THE SUN
I swear I’m not just adding al the Riordan Reads books to my TBR, I do plan on reading them eventually. Race To The Sun is about Nizhoni Begay who is able to detect monsters, particularly Mr. Charles, her dad’s new boss who seems a little too interested in Nizhoni and her brother, Mac, their Navajo heritage, and the legend of the Hero Twins. When Dad disappears the next day, leaving behind a message that says “Run!”, the siblings and Nizhoni’s best friend, Davery, are thrust into a rescue mission. The kids must pass a series of trials in which it seems like nature itself is out to kill them.
I love learning about other cultures and mythologies and Rick Riordan never disappoints 🙂
RELEASE DATE: 14th Jan
SPELLHACKER
Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever. But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.
I first came across Spellhacker because someone was looking for Indian OwnVoice readers and LGBTQ+ readers and I was lucky enough to get a spot on the blog tour. The premise sounds super interesting and while I still haven’t read the author’s debut book, you can expect a review for Spellhacker on my blog on the 21st.
RELEASE DATE: 21 Jan
TWEET CUTE
Pepper’s family runs a booming food-chain which Pepper manages along with Big LeagueBurger’s twitter account and a hundred other things. Her hands are getting more and more full with things threatening to spill. Jack is a class clown working at his family’s deli but when Big League Burger steals his grandma’s iconic grilled cheese recipe he’s on a Twitter war. Pepper and Jack’s spat turns into a viral Twitter war and soon people start shipping them? It’s an awkward romance that blooms over time.
I’ve heard so much about Tweet Cute and I’ve literally been dying to get an early copy but unfortunately, I’ll have to wait for its release like the rest of you.
RELEASE DATE: 21st Jan
ROGUE PRINCESS
A princess fleeing an arranged marriage teams up with a snarky commoner to foil a rebel plot in B. R. Myers’ Rogue Princess, a gender-swapped sci-fi YA retelling of Cinderella.
A GENDER-SWAPPED SCI-FI CINDERELLA RETELLING? How can this not be on anyone’s list?!
RELEASE DATE: 21st Jan
HIGHFIRE
I’m elated that Eoin Colfer, writer of the Artemis Fowl series is back with another book! I remember reading the Artemis Fowl series twice and loving it even though the science bits were kind of tough for me to understand. His new book, Highfire, sounds even better and yet more insane? It’s about a vodka-drinking, Flashdance-loving dragon who lives an isolated life in the bayous of Louisiana—and the raucous adventures that ensue when he crosses paths with a fifteen-year-old troublemaker on the run from a crooked sheriff.
I’m not even sure if I understood the rest of the blurb on Goodreads but all I know is that I want this book in my hands, as soon as possible.
RELEASE DATE: 28th Jan
SEVEN DEADLY SHADOWS
Kira’s life is shattered on the night her family’s shrine is attacked by a vicious band of yokai demons. With the help of Shiro—the shrine’s gorgeous half-fox, half-boy kitsune—Kira discovers that her shrine harbours an ancient artifact of great power . . . one the yokai and their demon lord, Shuten-doji, will use to bring down everlasting darkness upon the world. Kira enlists the aid of seven ruthless shinigami—or death gods—to help stop the brutal destruction of humankind. With war drawing nearer by the day, Kira realizes that if this unlikely band of heroes is going to survive, they’re going to have to learn to work together, confront their demons, and rise as one to face an army of unimaginable evil.

Thanks for listing all of these great titles – some were on my radar already, but not all of them, including Rogue Princess which sounds incredible! Loveboat Taipei, Scavenge the Stars, The Nameless Queen and Seven Deadly Shadows all sound brilliant so I am looking forward to reading them, although I imagine that the UK release dates may be different to the USA dates. I will be looking out for your February list too!

Thanks, Christina! Ah yes, I’m not sure about the UK dates, I mostly picked these dates from Goodreads. Hope you enjoy these books 😃

I use the dates on Goodreads too, even though the UK or international date is often different. Still, several websites ship internationally so I can still try to get my hands on them!

ahhh, i’m anticipating the same stuff too! i liked loveboat, taipei, but unfortunately not as much as everyone else seemed to? i will always love books with own voices Asian rep though, and I will never get over how stunning the cover is! i was anticipating Infinity Son for a while (and I even got an e-arc!), but then i read some of the early reviews. they really weren’t looking good? But i’m excited to know your thoughts on it if you read it!
i was seeing spellhacker everywhere too! at first, i wasn’t anticipating it, but then more and more people started yelling about it. plus, it sounds amazingly queer & entertaining—I am now so excited to read it! other january 2020 releases that I happen to be anticipating are Scavenge the Stars and Tweet Cute, haha ❤ I hope we both enjoy these!

Oof that’s okay! Omg yes I love the colourful background 😍 Aww really? I’m looking forward to it but I’m not gonna read it until the sequel is out. Otherwise I forget the first book by the time the sequel is out and I don’t want to re-read it so it just sits there unfinished…
I’m currently reading Spellhacker and having a little trouble getting into the worldbuilding but hopefully that will pass.
I hope so too 😄
