Blogs Based Solely on Book Reviews

For some reason nobody has been talking about this very crucial topic in the bookish community, so guess who took the charge?

That’s right, me! Today we’re going to talk about book reviews, you know those long-ass strings of words that us bookworms pour their heart and soul into?

Reading a book is easy but reviewing it is not.

Not only does composing a good book review take long hours but sometimes you accidentally ruin the book for yourself bh over analyzing every single word. Which is why I respect all the book bloggers out there internally screaming as they churn out reviews day after day, you guys deserve a medal. But at the same time, I get really annoyed by blogs that are solely based on book reviews and have no other content whatsoever.

I’m glad you asked why…

But before I start off on this very important topic let me just emphasize that these are my opinions and it is totally fine if you disagree with me since everyone is subjected to their own views and I just need to get this out. I’m not trying to possess or hypnotize you into everything I say.

True fact: Blogs filled with post after post of book reviews annoy the hell out of me!

I know book reviews are very important. They’re crucial to help a bookworm decide which book to pick up, to publicize that very book, give anxiety and stress disorders to reviewers and lots of other stuff. But maybe post something other than book reviews just once in a while?

NlWGQ.gif

There are quite a few problems regarding reviews these days…

  • People won’t bother to read it if it’s about a really popular book at that moment of time, because you can find A HUNDRED MORE REVIEWS on the same book. What makes yours stand out? They probably don’t even want to find out since they’ve already gone over repetitive thoughts regarding that book through various other blogs and platforms.
  • The number of views and comments on such posts tend to be quite low because frankly speaking, what do you comment? You shouldn’t be expecting more than 8 words, like ‘Nice post, keep it up’ or ‘I REALLY WANT TO READ THAT BOOK’ And if you’re lucky some nerd who is really eager to gush about the book you reviewed may stumble upon your blog post. Yaay!
  • Too much of anything can be monotonous. You’re just posting review after review after review and my eyes are glazing over the content and you’ve probably lost me mid-way because I have a really short attention span. Oops?
  • Some people wail when they see book reviews because shit their TBRs took a humongous hit!

lkj.gif

  • People want something from YOU! They want original content, something that shows them that you’re worth hitting that follow button and spending time upon. Let your creative juices flow!

At this point some of you might be getting uncomfortable. Whoops I only post book reviews and tags, my life is officially screwed. Better late than never!

You can still make amends, start posting fresh, quality content that will immediately grip the reader’s attention. Search deep within your heart to find what you really want to talk about, it’s not that hard!

A few ideas can be-

  • Discussion posts
  • Your reading life, bookshelf tour etc
  • Current debates in the book community and much much more!

But at the end of the day, this is your blog. You need to make your own decisions and maneuver yourself into the right direction to decide whatever is the best for your blog. But on the other hand, if you’re really passionate about your reviews and feel that your blog is faring pretty well based on them alone, then go ahead! Don’t let me, or anyone else stop you.

You do you 🙂

So is there anyone else who gets turned off by blogs with only book reviews or am I the only weird creature here? How many book reviews do you write? And do you actually review every book you read? Don’t forget to comment and let me know down below!

  1. Great post! This is a topic that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, too. My first year of blogging, I pretty much wrote only book review posts. However, I think to be fair to myself, I needed that time to figure out how I wanted to go about writing them because they are A LOT of work. I agree with you on the fact that book review after book review can be numbing for the viewer. However, it’s also what we are here to do? I can write about books and create all sorts of content, but I also have a commitment to review in a timely fashion! 😛 It’s all personal preference. I definitely write a review for each and every book I read. Part of the reason being that I like to process what I read—and look for meaning in the book. But again, it’s all in what tickles your fancy and depends on how much engagement you are seeking to have on the blog!

    • Most people don’t really get the hang of blogging in their first year, it’s taking a lot of time for me to figure stuff out! Yes, as I said ultimately the world does need book reviews. When I had just started my blog I had decided to review every book I read. But then I had to properly dissect a book that I loved for a competition and that somehow ruined the book for me so now I’m pretty selective about what I review! Thank you for commenting! 🙂

  2. I’m not tat good at articulating my thoughts on topics.. and I have lots of conflicting opinions.. and I don’t like confrontations at all… and I also like writing only book reviews… what can I say.. I guess I’ll just continue this way till I feel compelled to post something different on my blog…

    • Ah, I get you. It can be really hard sometimes. Maybe you should keep on writing book reviews and try drafting random short posts whenever you find yourself free? Worked wonders for me 🙂

  3. Oooo love this post. I agree with you though, I can’t cope with book reviews. I’m super invisible on a lot of book reviews I just don’t like reading them mainly because I don’t want to be influenced. Sometimes I’ll pop on over if the cover caught my eye or someone like yourself (whom I know and pop up onto your blog regularly) has posted a review for a book I loved or one I hated just to see others opinions. Otherwise I tend to steer clear. I do know that a lot of people find book reviews useful though and so that’s pretty much why I started with reviews also because sometimes I just need to talk about the book, you know? Mostly the reviews are a way for me to brain dump all my thoughts in a review/review and discussion.

Funnily enough though I started out my blog with discussion posts and book tags. Even now I still have a ton of non review content going up on my blog. But that’s down to me loving to chat about topics relating to books. Book reviews are great and I admire everyone who sits there and writes them, it’s hard. But like you said, writing a discussion post maybe once a week can really help. A lot of people love reading others thoughts on topics (I know I do) and I also love writing my Bookworms Explained posts because i like being sarcastic and trying to explain certain things we do or say is actually hilarious.

    • Exactly my point! There are so many conflicting opinions on a book everywhere that I just get confused- should I read it or not? I like to pick up books on my own or based on the blurbs. Haha I love that you keep popping on regularly 🙈 I have such a dilemma when people I know and follow post book reviews! Do I read it or not? Will they be offended if I don’t appear? Aghhhh. Lol yes even my reviews are just a way for me to rant or squeal about them! Yes, I absolutely love discussion posts, especially your bookworms explained 💕

      • Eeek! Thank youuu new one is up today too xD But yes I just like to pick it up on my own terms which is why I still went and bought Zenith even though there’s a ton of mixed reviews on it. I wanna experience it for myself you know? Cause we’re all different, its why in my reviews I remind them that just because I didn’t like it doesn’t mean they won’t. 🙂

  4. LOL I’m that person who only posts book reviews!
I think that for the longest time, that’s all I wanted to be. I was blogging for me and I wanted to put my opinions out there. But it gets lonely FAST. Like you said, there’s not much room for interaction. It’s why I started writing discussion posts that I feature every Friday and why I have montly wrap ups of my favourite books that I read that month. I think I’m still going to primarily be a book review blogger – I still like to post reviews and get my opinion out. But I’m going to work on varying the content and getting other types of posts up so that people get to know me better as a person!

    • Yes, I’ve noticed 🙂
I’ll admit I don’t always read all your book reviews because wow there are so many and I envy your reading pace. But I try my best not to miss out on your other posts at all! Discussion posts can be really interactive and bring a huge change in your stats too!

      • Haha thanks! I think the main reason I write so many review posts is because of the number of ARCs I have to get through, otherwise my review posts wouldn’t be as frequent. Glad you like my discussion posts though!

  5. I prefer having book discussions and debates in the content but I also follow blogs that post only reviews. Without them I don’t think I would have found the hidden gems or had my reading taste develop.

You’re right as well about reviews getting the least exposure 😦

    • Sometimes I’ll follow blogs that post only book reviews but later on rarely rad what they post… I’m a horrible person.

And regardless of all that I said it’s really sad book reviews don’t get much attention since they take such a lot of time and effort 😦

  6. The majority of my stuff are book reviews because technically, that’s what the blog is about 😀 However I do throw in a meme here and there to change things up. That being said, like you advised, you do you and be happy. 😉

  7. I agree with you completely. Book reviews can sometimes be hard to read as well as write. But I actually enjoy writing book reviews it’s just that reading book reviews can be a bit boring. But then I suck at writing original posts. So now I don’t know what I am good at. Although I have respect for all those blogger who keep posting review after review because we all know how hard it is to write a review. Great post but I am confused now.

  8. I don’t think I have enough reviews on my account lol! I’m on the other side of the spectrum! But I agree only book reviews are boring

  9. Omg! This is me 😂 my blog just turned three months and it’s 95% book reviews and 1% readables and 4% tags/awards. Some reviews tho have printable bookmarks. As someone who loves doing book reviews i’d like to say that the reason i started blogging is to create reviews: to not forget the books ive read. But you’re right. It gets too boring. Sometimes i look at my blog and see “meh” and i often find myself reading other bloggers’ readables. So maybe soon i’ll post more readables myself. Loved your post!

  10. Yep, I’m that blogger who has a book review blog that is mostly. . . book reviews. With the occasional author interview, meme, silly post, not-a-review, or other non-review post.

My book review posts get the fewest hits and comments, for exactly the reasons you mention above. Especially for newer books, either the book is so new that i can’t give anything away, or there are a thousand nearly identical books out there.

Luckily, my reviewing style has evolved over the years. I guess I started writing book reviews to learn how to write, to learn how to express myself, to be better at communicating what I was thinking and feeling. After a few years, I got halfway decent at it. These days, my reviews are less what the book was about, if I liked the characters, how was the prose, but more along the lines of what did this book make me think about? What questions did it make me ask, and how will the answers make me feel? Lol, I probably do way too much of reading between the lines! I also tend to read a lot of weird obscure stuff, which is fun.

    • I absolutely love those kinds of reviews! Because everyone knows what the book is about and also I like knowing people’s thoughts. That is why reviews take up so much time 😅

Thank you for commenting and good luck on your reviews!

  11. I also don’t really enjoy reviews-only blogs (although I can understand how sometimes it’s easy to get carried away and just do reviews if you want to take a break from creativity). I totally agree about the ‘overanalyzing’ part though, which is why I try to make the reviews different for myself as well – without the analysis part, too much. Some of them are jsut top 5 lists, which are both fun to write and more fun to read than just a huuuuuge slab of text. I also don’t post all my reviews on the blog. Only really good ones go there, or ones I have personally promised to publish on the blog. The rest goes on Goodreads and Amazon. In the end, it’s Amazon that matters the most to authors, so you know.

  12. Nice post! This topic is surely debatable, but guess what, I too was thinking about the same thing a few days back after I saw a particular blog posting just reviews. I have to admit that I too posted mostly reviews during the six months of blogging. But now I know better.

You are right, book reviews get the least number of comments. But at the same time, it is also true that it becomes a responsibility to post the reviews at the right time in case they are review copies or ARCS (which I always fail in, btw). So I guess lots of bloggers caught up in this.

So yes, in the end, it depends upon you 🙂

    • Ah I do get your point. Sometimes bloggers can get really caught up in book reviews and arc copies, I should know I accidentally signed up for too many blog tours this month…

Thank you so much for letting me know your views!

  13. Okay I hate this post. I try and be polite to everyone but I have to say something here. You say “you do you” constatnly through this post but you’re also saying “I get really annoyed by blogs that are solely based on book reviews and have no other content whatsoever”, “People won’t bother to read it”, “They want original content” on top of stating that blogs with just reviews get low comments and “you can still make amends”.

What someone else posts on their blog really isn’t any of your business. A review is original comment much as this is, even if this is taking the time to bash other book bloggers for what they want to post on their blog. *side eye*

If you hate blogs with just reviews fine, but maybe just don’t follow those blogs and keep that opinion to yourself. Instead of coming across as a helpful, “Here’s Other Things You Can Post On Your Blog!” I’m getting “Your blog sucks, I hate it and I’m judging you for it, person I’ve never met.”

I won’t get replies from this but if you really want to yell at me or whatever I’m on Twitter @vee_ramage

    • I apologise if this came out wrong. I was just stating my opinions, I don’t have a problem with what others do. I have friends who post only book reviews on their blogs but I support their blog by reading other posts, I’m just not that interested in other posts, don’t take it personally.

Sorry if you felt offended. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts.

  14. I rarely read reviews on WordPress, just on Goodreads. If it’s a book I read I’ll read it to see their thoughts and compare mine. If it’s a book I’m interested in, I skim it in fear of spoilers.
I do collections of mini reviews, just to give people a taste of the book without boring them.
